Brooklyn Raga Massive presents Ragas in Motion, an evening of dance and classical Raga music. Ragas in Motion attempts to bridge the divide between music and movement by encouraging collaborative work between musicians and dancers.
Featuring local South Asian classical musicians from around New York, renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Malini Srinivasan and award-winning Kathak dancer Barkha Patel will each perform new work and compositions that are dynamic and highlight Raga music.
Witness—and listen—as Brooklyn Raga Massive transcends artistic genres and mediums to exemplify the ephemeral nature of Raga music!
About Brooklyn Raga Massive:
Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM), is an adventurous musicians’ collective that creates cross-cultural understanding through the lens of South Asian classical music, raga, by preserving and expanding this rich music genre. BRM aims to enrich and strengthen the raga-inspired musical ecosystem in New York City and across the country by providing direct support to artists, fostering collaboration through our jam sessions, facilitating cultural exchange through educational initiatives, and producing transcendent, and often massive, performances, festivals, and one-of-a-kind albums.
About Malini Srinivasan:
Malini Srinivasan is a third-generation Bharatanatyam artist and the disciple of world-renowned artist Sri C.V. Chandrasekhar. A critically-acclaimed soloist and choreographer, Malini has presented Bharatanatyam in the U.S., Europe, and India. Her choreography is grounded in tradition but always reaching into new directions of form and content. Her creative work thrives on close collaborations with poets, visual artists, and musicians of all genres, including Carnatic, Western classical, and Khayal.
About Barkha Patel:
Barkha Patel is a kathak dancer, choreographer, educator, and the Artistic Director of Barkha Dance Company based in NYC. She has performed solo and ensemble works at dance festivals in India and the U.S. Her work has been presented in venues such as Dance Theatre Harlem, Jacob’s Pillow, Joyce Theatre, Lincoln Center, Little Island, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NJPAC and SOPAC. Her awards and grants include a choreographic fellowship with NJPAC, an Individual Artist grant from Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, a Leadership Mentee with Dance/USA Institute, fellow with Forge NYC consulting, National Arts Club fellow, and a Jerome Hill Artist Finalist 2023. Most recently, she was awarded the 2023 Juried Bessie Award and is in residency with Movement Research.
