"MA/間" “space in between” draws inspiration from human connection that was deeply ingrained in society during the Sengoku Period, also called the Warring States Period, in Japan from the 15th to 17th Centuries. It is the experience in which one loses faith that life still holds meaning despite the temporary nature of all things we deem relevant and significant to our lives.
Ultimately, the research is dedicated to a dialogue between coordination and contradiction of one’s desire and purpose.
This program is supported by a joint fellowship between The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University and Chelsea Factory.
About Mio Ishikawa:
Mio Ishikawa (she/her), Japanese movement artist based in New York City, works collaboratively across multiple artistic mediums. Ishikawa trained at The Juilliard School (BFA 2019). She has performed in Punchdrunk's Sleep No More NYC and is a performer with Sidra Bell Dance New York. Ishikawa is a co-founder and an associate director of a bicoastal dance platform BODYSONNET.
About the Center for Ballet and the Arts:
The Center for Ballet and the Arts is an international research institute for scholars and artists of dance and its related arts and sciences. It exists to inspire new ideas and new dances, expanding the way we think about the art form's history, practice, and performance in the 21st century.
